ANARKALI CHEF REPAYS HIS HOMELAND
|
Tahirul Hasan Juned - partner in the Anarkali restaurant in West Street - has set up the Anonddo Charity to help fund secondary education for young Bangladeshis who can't afford it. His charity uses money from sponsors to help children of different faiths and ages. Mr Juned, who moved to the UK 22 years ago said: "I remember my country very well and there are very, very poor people there. Every child has the right to schooling and although there are many big charities like Oxfam and the Red Cross working in Bangladesh, they only tend to support people in big cities. The name Anonddo means happy in Bengali and Mr Huned is looking to support more than 200 young people by the end of next year. "If children go to school it means, rather than working in the fields, they can earn more money and get more jobs with better prospects" he said. "Our charity supports human beings who need help and and is not directed at any one religion" He carefully vets applications and matches them with sponsors who meet the annual schooling cost of 35 to 40. Once his charity agrees to fund a child it will ensure he or she gets the money until they complete their secondary education. "Every day I spend two or three hours working on the charity. There is a lot of help coming and people are being very generous " said Mr Juned. You can find out more about the Anonddo Charity at an event at 24 Cornish Road at 3pm next Sunday.
