DOHN PROUT OF THE ROLLRIGHT STONES DIES AFTER A LONG FIGHT WITH ILLNESS
|
We were shocked to learn that Dohn Prout passed away in the Horton yesterday afternoon (28th April). Dohn lived in Chippy and was well known around the town. Dohn was the manager of the Rollright Stones. He loved the site with a passion. He was always buzzing with new ideas for improving access to and encouraging appreciation of the ancient monument. He spearheaded a number of recent successful applications for grants and has undertaken major works on new pathways and pedestrian routes. Over the last few years he has had to contend with the disastrous paint daubing incident and then a fire. I think he had another job in London which seemed to be about advising on Planning issues but he didn't tell me much about it. But he did tell me a lot about Pulmonary Hypertension which is a disease he suffered from and battled with for many years. Dohn was a keen supporter of the PH Association fighting for funds for improved research and treatments. Dohn himself had to travel to the Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for his treatment and he was always full of praise for the skilful care he received there. It is incredible just how full and energetic Dohn's life was given the constraints his health imposed. Dohn was a lovely man and a joy to be with. His enthusiasm for life generally and projects at the Stones in particular often left you struggling to keep up. We will miss him. We send our deepest sympathy to his family - particularly his wife and two daughters.
Dohn's funeral will be held at Banbury Crematorium at 2pm on Thursday 10th May. All those who knew Dohn are welcome to attend to celebrate his life. Family flowers only please. Instead, donations to PHA UK and/or The Rollright Trust, c/o A.L. Sole and Son, Bidston Close, Choicehill Road, Over Norton, Chipping Norton, OX7 5PP.
