George Hummer Writing Prize
|
A Committee has been set up to establish the George Hummer Writing Prize, The committee is: Patrick Neale Jaffe & Neale (Chairman), Jill Thorley -Chipping Norton News (Secretary), Pam Hummer, Michelle Stevenson and James Crease. They have issued the following statement:
As an encouragement to the young and not so young we wish to establish a prize for good writing, either prose or poetry, of not more than 1000 words. It would be open to all within 15 miles of Chipping Norton who are not writing as a career. The naming of the prize after George Hummer is appropriate as he is remembered by many in Chippy for the warmth of his personality and his support of the arts. His knowledge of literature was profound and he imparted this to his many friends. His reviews for the Chipping Norton News of our Theatre productions were always stylish and would be one model for what we have in mind for the prize. In the immediate future we wish to gauge the public interest in supporting the prize. Already several hundred pounds have been promised to help the launch in October. An account has been opened at the HSBC in the name of the George Hummer Literary Prize. It is likely that the award will be made in association with the annual Music Festival in March. If you agree with the objective of the prize, and would be prepared in principle to donate to the funds, then we would like to hear from you by email to either or This would greatly help us in determining the scope of the prize.
