BRICKBATS FOR THE COUNTY COUNCIL.....
TOPSIDE PAVEMENTS
ARE SHOCKING AND PEOPLE ARE HURTING THEMSELVES

These pictures were all taken on Topside April 2nd 2005

Letter from Samantha Smith of Cornish Road

My nan Mrs.Doherty visited Barclays Bank on the High Street at 9:30 on Wednesday 10th November and was on her way to collect her pension at the Post Office. When she was passing the hoarding around the White Hart Hotel she tripped on a defect in the pavement. She fell to the ground. A young woman with small children tried to help her up but eventually a passing gentleman helped her to her feet. Mrs. Doherty was very shaken and was called a taxi. On arriving home she contacted West Street Surgery. Over Christmas Mrs. Doherty attended sessions at Chipping Norton hospital designed for people overcoming falls. In the New Year her pain was worsening. She had an X-ray at Chipping Norton hospital on the 7th January 2005 and was assessed as having a fractured pelvis and 2 fractured vertebrae. She was very bruised inside her thighs having difficulty walking and had injured her right shoulder in the fall resulting in limited use of her right arm. The NHS has provided walking frames, bath seats, toilet fastenings and a bed rest. She is on painkillers and diuretics to bring the swelling down in her legs. She has difficulty sleeping and is in constant pain. She has not left the house since her x-ray and is frightened of falling again. On talking to local shopkeepers it seems that many people have fallen on the pathways due to loose and uneven paving slabs. One elderly lady was left lying in a similar area for half an hour waiting for an ambulance about 3 weeks ago. I have spoken to a Mrs. Harper who fell within inches of Mrs. Doherty on uneven paving slabs.  Making local enquiries has opened my eyes to the amount of accidents taking place - from minor falls, to ladies losing teeth and bruising faces, to my nan's fractured pelvis. The Council are aware of issues but seem reluctant to take action. If you could help my nan and many other families fight this battle for safe pavements along Chipping Norton High Street this would be much appreciated. My nan is too afraid to leave the house in case she falls again/

We are not sure who Samantha tried to interest in this case earlier. Whats for sure is that the details never got to Rob Evans the local County Councillor. As soon as Rob heard about it he contacted the Engineers and has arranged an Inspection visit which he and District Councillor Coles will be present at. Samantha can be reassured that her complaint is now receiving some top level attention.
